OUCH! Is that an ingrown toenail?
Ingrown toenails are incurvated and grow into the skin, usually on the edges. This painful piercing of the nail irritates the skin, and cause redness, swelling, and warmth, all of these are signs of an infection. Bacteria may even enter the area further infecting it.
There are a variety of causes for ingrown toenails, such as:
- Trauma or injury of the nail
- Improper nail trimming
- Improper shoe fitting
- Fungal Infections
Some ways to avoid ingrown toenails are practicing proper trimming techniques of the toenails and wearing well-fitted shoes and socks.
If your ingrown toenail has become infected you shouldn’t attempt to treat it yourself, avoid “Bathroom Surgery”. You need to see a foot doctor.
