“Alive Inside”: Music to Reawaken the Soul.

A friend of mine, Tony Fisher, has been crucial in implementing the use of music at the Healdsburg Senior Living Center.  This idea was first introduced to him by the documentary “Alive Inside”.

Music has the ability “to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it”

In our office, we started to implement the use of music with our elderly patients while they have pedicure spas. Last week I had an extraordinary experience. I asked our patient what era music she would like to listen to. Her response was, 40’s big band music, as we listened she came alive. Every song brought her joy, bringing memories back. One song brought her to a Glamorous Ballroom, dancing her with now deceased husband. For 20 minutes she was taken through a beautiful journey of memories. Her joy was very apparent.

I repeated the use of music with other patients, an elderly patient with dementia even spoke in Swedish which she had never done while in our office. Music is very powerful, but this only works if it’s someone’s favorite music and it’s tied to their past.

If you have an elderly friend or relative dealing with dementia or who just needs a bit of joy in their life, play some of their favorite music and see them “Come Alive”.
