Foot Health While Pregnant

AdobeStock_70960845Many women experience general fatigue and soreness throughout their entire body while pregnant but a large complaint is sore feet and swelling.

“Due to the natural weight gain during pregnancy, a woman’s center of gravity is completely altered. This causes a new weight-bearing stance and added pressure to the knees and feet.”

Pregnant women are susceptible to aching and swollen feet. It is very important to watch for and take care of symptoms. Here are a few tips for proper foot care during pregnancy:

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot. Wear a supportive sandal, house shoe or slipper as an alternative
  • Wear shoes with good arch support – no flimsy shoes that are easily rolled up like a burrito
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Get foot massages
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking which will promote blood circulation to the feet

“Over-Pronation, also referred to as flat feet, is caused when a person’s arch flattens out upon weight bearing and their feet roll inward when walking. This can create extreme stress or inflammation on the plantar fascia, the fibrous band of tissue that runs from the heel to the forefoot. Over-pronation can make walking very painful and can increase strain on the feet, calves and/or back.”
